Emmett was back in familiar territory Wednesday as he competed at the 71st annual Rodeo of the Ozarks in Parsons Stadium. His father, Skip, is a former rodeo professional and is now a judge at the Rodeo of the Ozarks.

Emmett, who holds a master's degree in management from Lindenwood University and a undergraduate degree in agriculture and agricultural business from Arkansas State University, took 9.3 seconds to take down his steer and finished in fifth place Wednesday, the opening night of the four-day rodeo. Five riders didn't even score in the event.

Emmett said the Springdale event is one of his favorites. He said he used to compete in over 50 rodeos each year, but that schedule has been cut down some in recent years after he and his wife started a family.

"I'm from this area, and I grew up coming here," Emmett said. "I have been coming here ever since I can remember. I got to see all the big time contestants here. This is one of the rodeos you want to go to because it is one of the top rodeos in the country. It's an honor to come here and compete."

Emmett said being able to compete professionally helps him as a coach.

"To watch kids that love it as much as you do is great," Emmett said. "It's good to stay in competition because you can work out with your athletes. You still understand that competition part of it."

One of the better efforts Wednesday was in the bareback riding competition. After watching two riders put up scores of 84, R.C. Landingham came out of the chute last and earned a score of 84 to win the first go-round.

Landingham, of Pendleton, Oregon, rode Power Play and he said he got a scouting report on the horse before the gates opened.

"I had a really good horse and one of my traveling partners had him earlier this year," Landingham said. "I also talked to a few other guys and he really wants to take your hips from you.

"My riding style is giving my hips sometimes. I had a little trouble with that and it probably cost me a few points. But I am pleased."

The Rodeo of the Ozarks continues tonight and concludes Saturday with a traditional fireworks show and the crowning of the Miss Rodeo of the Ozarks. Tickets to the rodeo are available at the Rodeo of the Ozarks office at Parsons Stadium, by calling the ticket office at 756-0464 or online at rodeooftheozarks.org.
