Maumelle mounts comeback, tops Harrison

HARRISON -- The Maumelle Hornets stand alone unbeaten and atop the 5A-West Conference standings at the halfway points after defeating the Harrison Goblins 60-51 Friday night on LT's Court.

Maumelle (16-4) in its first year in the 5A-West, is 7-0 in league play at the halfway point. The Goblins (13-7, 4-3) won their first four games in conference play but have lost three in a row.

Neither team shot particularly well Friday and the teams combined for 42 turnovers,including 22 by Harrison.

The Goblins trailed most of the game but managed outscored the Hornets 18-12 in the third quarter to take a 43-41 lead into the final quarter. But Maumelle got two free throws and a three-pointer from Devonte Lott to open the final quarter and take a 46-43 lead. A free throw and a layup by Harrison's Tanner Curry tied the score one last time at 46-46 with 6:19 left.

Harrison then suffered through a three-minute scoring slump as the Hornets scored the next six points to take a 52-46 lead with 4:10 left. After Curry scored to cut it to 52-48 with 3:43 left, Maumelle outscored Harrison 8-2 to open up a 60-50 advantage. Harrison converted 1 of 3 free throws in the final 50 seconds to set the final.

The Goblins were hot early on, scoring eight in a row after Maumelle scored the first basket of the game. But after Silas Huskey put Harrison up 8-2 with 5:42, the Goblins went cold from the floor and missed their next 10 shots.

The Hornets, who missed six shots after taking the early lead, took almost the entire quarter to capitalize on Harrison's misfortune and finally took a 10-8 lead on a short jumper by Edmond Robinson with 50 seconds left in the first. Jackson Marseilles ended a 5:17 scoring drought for the Goblins, and Huskey ended the opening quarter with a running jumper for a 12-10 edge.

Maumelle struggled from the floor at the start of the second quarter while Harrison opened a 16-10 lead, but the Hornets outscored the Goblins 15-2 over a 2:52 stretch to take a 25-18 advantage Tremont Robinson's three-pointer with 3:20 left in the first half.

Huskey and Brock Humphrey pulled the Goblins to within 25-23 and with 38.2 seconds left, and Huskey converted two free throws to close the gap to 26-25. But Maumelle's Barry Nixon closed the half with a three-pointer at the top of the key.

Maumelle maintained its edge for most of the third quarter. A three-pointer by Brock Humphrey pulled Harrison to within 35-34, and his second three-pointer of the quarter made it 39-37. It was 41-37 when the Goblins scored the final six points of the third, going up 43-41 on two free throws by Marseilles.

Tyshun Robinson led Maumelle with 11 points, and Tremont Robinson had 10.

Huskey led Harrison with 18 points. Curry finished with nine.
