Fundraiser set for U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith

FORT SMITH — A show paying tribute to Fort Smith's Wild West heritage is planned to benefit the U.S. Marshals Museum, which will serve as a national center to educate visitors on the past and present roles of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The March 14 event at the Expo Center at Kay Rodgers Park features cocktails, mechanical bull riding, an auction, blackjack and more.

Formal groundbreaking on the project was held last September — on the 225th anniversary of the creation of the marshals service.

The museum is to be built on the banks of the Arkansas River overlooking where the marshals patrolled in what was then the Indian Territory that is now Oklahoma.

The museum is scheduled to open in 2017.
