Springdale Har-Ber is eager for a home game against Rogers Heritage tonight after losing at Fort Smith Northside on Tuesday.

It was the first conference defeat for the Wildcats (13-4, 4-1).

"Every game is important the rest of the way, especially if we want a good seed in the (state) tournament," Har-Ber coach Scott Bowlin said. "We need to protect home court because road wins in this league are hard to come by."

The Har-Ber (15-5, 4-2) girls will also try to recover after losing at Northside.

Bailey Schalk returned to practice this week after getting hit in the face and leaving the game with six points against Northside.

Bentonville

Lady Tigers' defense stands out

Bentonville coach Tom Halbmaier has been pleased with all facets of his team's play over its last three games, but it's the Lady Tigers' defensive play that has caught his eye.

Bentonville (13-6, 4-2 7A-West) allowed just 22 points in a win at Springdale High, then gave up only 21 points in a win at home over Rogers last week. The Lady Tigers' defense was almost as stingy Tuesday night, giving up only 28 points to Rogers Heritage.

"The defense has been doing a good job of not giving up easy points," Halbmaier said. "We're not having to rely on the offense to score a lot of points, and that takes stress off the offense.

"We've been doing the same thing that we've been trying to do all season long. Sometimes, it takes a little longer for the first to buy into what we're trying to do and what we are trying to accomplish."

Rogers Heritage

Big game tonight

The War Eagles close out the first round of 7A-West Conference play with a big game at Springdale Har-Ber tonight.

Heritage boys coach Tom Olsen said Har-Ber likely has a talent advantage comparing each team's top five, but he likes his team's depth.

"I think they have more talent with that first wave, but I think our advantage is after that," Olsen said. "I think maybe we have a little more depth than they have. We may be more well-rounded one through eight."

The War Eagles (13-6, 4-2) got a big lift from senior guard Chris Coover, who scored a career high 18 in his first start against Fayetteville a week ago. Coover has provided a spark as Heritage's sixth man much of the season.

Forward Connor Hirsh leads Heritage in scoring averaging about 15 points per game. The 6-2 senior coud be key against Har-Ber, Olsen said.

Rogers High

Looking for a win

Both teans will celebrate Color's Day tonight when Springdale High visits King Arena. They are also looking for their first 7A-West Conference wins.

The Mounties (5-14, 0-6) will kickoff the varsity action at around 6:30 p.m. against the Bulldogs. The Lady Mounties (0-6, 6-13) will follow the boys game.

"Springdale presents a big challenge," said Lady Mounties coach Preston Early. "They are long, athletic and probably the biggest team in our league. So, they will really put a lot of stress on our defense and rebounding. One of their biggest strengths is offensive rebounding. One of the biggest keys will be defensive rebounds. Do it well, and we have a chance. Give them second chances all night, and we have no shot."

The Rogers girls have struggled to put together four solid quarters but Early said the team continues to work hard. Senior Brooke Sagely leads the Lady Mounties in scoring and rebounding, averaging 10.1 points and 5.8 rebounds a game. Sophomore Elise Randels is averaging 8.2 points and 4.8 rebounds a game.

Springdale High

Lady Bulldogs healthy

Wednesday was the first time in 34 practices Springdale High had its full roster available.

Injuries and illness off the court and inconsistent play on it have plagued the Lady Bulldogs (10-9, 1-5) during a five-game losing streak, but they are finally fully healthy. Junior all-state point guard Kierra Lang is slated to return tonight after missing three games with an ankle injury. She has missed eight games because of injury this year.

"She looks way better than even when she came back off her knee injury," coach Heather Hunsucker said. "I've got to have her."

Springdale badly needs to win its next two road games against Rogers and Rogers Heritage, teams with two combined conference victories, to get the season back on track.

Fayetteville

O'Grady picks up pace

Bulldogs senior C.J. O'Grady began to show improvement in his team's last two games. After a slow start to the season following football, he has seen increased minutes and production in the last week.

"We need him," Fayetteville boys basketball coach Kyle Adams said. "We need him down the stretch to step up and be the guy he can be. He offers so many things to our basketball team that nobody has seen this year. They all saw it last year but they haven't seen it this year. But it's a matter of time before he gets back to that."

O'Grady scored six points in a 55-52 loss at Rogers Heritage, then followed with perhaps his best half of basketball this season in the Bulldogs' 60-41 victory on Monday against Rogers High with seven points, three assists and two steals.

"He was getting frustrated the other day and I told him that this time last year he had already played in 15 games," Adams said. "I told him that you guys weren't in the state championship (in football) last season and he didn't miss any games for all-star type stuff. So he's still playing catch up."
