Black History Month events planned in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- Several February events are planned in celebration of Black History Month.

"African-Americans have played a major role in the development and sustainment of the most thriving city in the state of Arkansas," D'Andre Jones, a member of the Fayetteville Forward Economic Accountability Council's Inclusion Group, told a few dozen people Tuesday during a news conference at the Dwelling Place Church, 1855 N. Porter Road.

The events are being held in conjunction with Compassion Fayetteville's "Month of Compassion." Compassion Fayetteville is a three-year initiative that grew from the inclusion group. The initiative promotes selfless giving and encourages residents to record random acts of kindness.

Next month's events include:

• Feb. 5: Black History Month kickoff event at the University of Arkansas with Caree Banton, assistant professor of African & African American studies, 6 p.m., Room 230 of Memorial Hall, 480 Campus Drive.

• Feb. 12: Personal narratives of black experiences in Fayetteville, facilitated by Dorothy Marcy, a licensed professional counselor, and Dr. Valandra, assistant professor in the university's School of Social Work, 6:30 p.m., Fayetteville Public Library, 401 W. Mountain St.

• Feb. 15: A look at post-Civil War black settlers with Carolyn Allen, dean of university libraries, 3 to 5 p.m., Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Johnson Ave., Springdale.

• Feb. 19: Discussion: "Segregation -- When and Where Does It End?" and Oak Cemetery documentary screening, 6:30 p.m., Fayetteville Public Library, 401 W. Mountain St.

• Feb. 22: Black history celebration featuring black photographs, paintings, music and a community conversation facilitated by Danielle Wood, director of the university's Equal Opportunity & Compliance Office, and Andrew Kilgore, a local photographer, 3 to 5 p.m., St. James Missionary Baptist Church, 764 W. North St.
