BENTONVILLE -- A Rogers police officer was placed on paid administrative leave after his arrest Sunday in connection with driving while intoxicated.

Keith Foster, spokesman for the Rogers Police Department, said Elkins was arrested by a Benton County Sheriff's Office deputy on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Elkins' arrest came during a traffic stop by Deputy Michael Andrews.

Andrews was parked in a parking lot at Eighth and Walnut streets when he saw a red car stopped at a red light. The driver revved the engine motor several times, which attracted Andrews' attention, according to his report.

Elkins made a left turn and accelerated his vehicle. That caused the tires to spin and the car to turn sideways as it entered the intersection, according to Andrews' report.

Andrews then stopped the vehicle. Elkins' wife was a passenger in the front seat and two children were in the back, according to the report.

Andrews noticed Elkins' eyes were watery and bloodshot, the report states. Elkins admitted having one drink,.

Elkins was given a portable breath test, and the result was 0.127, according to Andrews' report. The legal limit in Arkansas is 0.08.

Andrews also had Elkins do sobriety tests he failed. Elkins was arrested and taken to the Benton County jail.

Elkins was given another breath test test at the jail, and the result was .099, according to Andrews' report.

The Rogers department placed Elkins on administrative leave pending the results of an internal investigation by the department's Office of Professional Standards, Foster said. The investigation will determine whether Elkins violated department policies and procedures, Foster said.

Elkins has worked for the department since March 2007, Foster said.
