GCT's work OT, tops Valley View

JONESBORO -- Blakely Adams scored the first field goal in the second overtime to give Greene County Tech the lead for good as the Lady Eagles defeated Valley View 69-66 Friday night in a key 5A-East Conference game.

Blaire Metheny led Greene County with a game-high 25 points, while Lara White added 16 and Adams had 13. The Lady Eagles made nine three-pointers.

Ashleigh Guthrie led Valley View with 24 points despite not playing in the second quarter because of three early fouls. Harleigh Jones added 20 points for the Lady Blazers.

Valley View (10-7, 3-2) took a 5-3 lead before Greene County Tech went on an 8-2 run to take an 11-7 lead with 2:14 on the clock after a field goal by Lara White. Greene County Tech closed out the first quarter with a 5-0 run that featured three free throws from Kassie Tyner as it took a 19-6 lead.

Greene County Tech (13-5, 4-1) expanded its lead to 10 with 2:50 remaining in the second quarter after two more free throws from Tyner, but Valley View closed to within 27-24 going into halftime after a 10-3 run. that featured two three-pointers by Harleigh Jones. Jones finished with 3 three-pointers in the quarter, which accounted for all nine of her points in the first half.

Greene County Tech allowed Valley View to close the gap to one on several occasions in the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles eventually took a 42-40 lead by outscoring Valley View 7-2 over the final 1:31 of the quarter. White and Metheny combined for 17 of their team's 22 points in the quarter.

The Lady Eagles kept their offensive pace to start the fourth quarter but fell apart, allowing Valley View to go on a 6-0 run that tied the game at 59-59 before each team swapped free throws to end regulation tied 61-61.

Both teams scored two points in the first overtime, and Green County Tech forced the second extra period on White's field goal with 2.1 seconds remaining.
