Bentonville mayor recognizes Outstanding Citizen Award winners

BENTONVILLE -- Mayor Bob McCaslin has named the fourth quarter recipients of the Outstanding Citizen Award.

The winners are Caitlyn Slaton, Brian Louis and NWA Aquatics (Sharks). Chick-fil-A sponsored a breakfast at the Downtown Activity Center on Wednesday to honor the residents and organization.

Fulbright Junior High School teacher Ricky Manes nominated Slaton. Slaton is dedicated to helping English as Second Language students, according to a news release.

"From day one in my class Caitlyn stood out among her peers as she went out of her way to help those in need," Manes wrote in his nomination.

William Bush nominated Louis for his dedication to a mentorship program he organizes for Mary Mae Jones Elementary School students. Louis rallies his Kraft Foods colleagues to become mentor volunteers at the school. There are 20 mentors who help with reading, math and other assignments.

Kathleen Breed nominated the 15 members of the NWA Aquatics (Sharks) swim team. Breed's nomination detailed the Dec. 5 "Swim Night for Athletes with Special Needs" program.

The event was held at the Walton Life Fitness Center and was hosted by Bike Bentonville, Bentonville Public Schools and the Walton Life Fitness Center. It was part of a series of programs for athletes with special needs.

The award program began in January 2011 to recognize volunteer contributions of Bentonville residents. There are three award categories: adult, youth and community group.

First quarter nominations for 2015 will be accepted until March 20. Winners will be announced during National Volunteer Week, April 12-18. To obtain a nomination, visit www.bentonvillear.com.
