Basketball: Bentonville gets help in win over Rogers High

BENTONVILLE -- Jason McMahan said some of Bentonville's other players need to rise to the occasion and take some of the scoring pressure off Malik Monk.

Monk still scored a game-high 25 points, but others made significant contributions to the cause as Bentonville rolled to a 63-30 victory over Rogers High in 7A-West Conference boys basketball action Friday night in Tiger Arena.

Rogers (5-13, 0-5): Freeland 17, Benninghoff 6, Heffley 4, Black 3.

Bentonville (10-5, 4-0): Monk 25, Robinson 9, Carter 5, Smith 5, Loy 5, Head 4, Estrada 3, Snow 3, Jones 2, Hemphill 2.

Tyler Robinson scored all nine of his points in the first-half, and others continued to contribute when Monk left the game late in the third quarter with Bentonville (10-5, 4-0) sporting a comfortable 51-26 lead.

"I felt like we had some guys really do a good job of moving around the ball and sharing it," McMahan said. "Cory Jones did a good job of that, and Aaron Estrada gave us a good lift off the bench, moving the ball and setting up shots with good ball movement.

"We got points from Daniel Head, and some good passing by Trent Carter. Malik and Tyler did their thing, and I thought Ben Smith was the player of the game with how he changed shots inside."

Smith's 3-pointer with 2 minutes, 55 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Tigers a 14-4 cushion, and it never dropped into double digits ahead. Monk put on most of his show with four dunks in the second quarter, including one off an alley-oop pass by Robinson just before halftime to make it a 37-19 game.

Bentonville then forced the sportsmanship rule and the running clock to go into effect when Hunter Loy's 3-pointer made it 56-25 with 5:50 remaining.

"That's the kind of pick your poison with them," Rogers coach Wayne Herren said. "You hope you can keep Malik within a realm and hope the others don't pick up the slack.

"We're a very inexperienced team, and for a lot of our kids, this is their first taste of big-time, 7A-West basketball on the road. We've only had one other road game, and it was at Heritage. This will help us grow and mature."

Milacio Freeland paced Rogers (5-13, 0-5) with 17 points.

Bentonville took control with a 13-2 run over a 4-minute span, then used a 10-0 outburst in the second quarter and a 20-1 run in the third quarter to pull away.

"On both sides of the ball, we played pretty good," Bentonville coach Tom Halbmaier said. "I was very pleased with the effort and the mental preparation our ladies put into the game. I was proud to see the maturity, and they had a sense of being relaxed before the game."

Peyton Taylor had 15 points and Lauren Hargus 13 for Bentonville (12-6, 3-2), which forced a running clock with a 47-16 lead at the end of the third quarter. Kelsey Richmond had six points for Rogers (6-12, 0-5).
