Two state inmates die in custody

The Arkansas Department of Correction says two of its inmates have died in recent days, including one who was convicted of murder more than 40 years ago.

Floyd Summerville, 64, died shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday from cardiopulmonary arrest, agency spokesman Cathy Frye said in an email.

Summerville had been sentenced in 1971 to life in prison in the killing of W. W. Dobbs in Pulaski County. He died at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.

Inmate Allen Evans, meanwhile, died about 5:45 a.m. Friday from natural causes, Frye said in a separate email. He had been receiving palliative care at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit, where the prison system's hospital is located, she added.

Evans, 71, had been sentenced in 2006 in Craighead County on charges including attempted murder and committing a felony with a firearm.
