Interstate 55 bridge closing causes detour

LITTLE ROCK -- Construction will require closing a bridge over Interstate 55 and detouring traffic for a month in Mississippi County beginning Monday, according to the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.

Crews will raise the Arkansas 150 bridge by 17 inches as part of work on a $25.3 million project to reconstruct a section of I-55 from just north of Arkansas 18 to the Mississippi line. The project is expected to be complete by April 2016.

All traffic that uses the bridge will have to use the Arkansas 18 bridge in Blytheville, which is 4 miles to the south, or the Missouri O bridge in Holland, Mo.

Detours will be marked and message boards will route traffic around the site until it is ready to open in late March. Both I-55 and the east and west frontage roads will remain open throughout construction, according to the department.

The bridge, built in 1960, is 326 feet long, 31 feet wide and has a clearance height of 14.5 feet.
