A team from Southside High School in Fort Smith took first place in the National Science Bowl regional competition held Jan. 31 at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. The winning team, coached by Josh Adams, included Jordan Myers, Blake Larkin, captain, Brayley Gattis, Adams, Justin Eckes and Chase Green. By winning the regional event at UAFS, Southside advances to the national completion, scheduled in April in Washington, D.C. A team from Little Rock Central earned second place. Six teams competed from schools including Fayetteville High School, Southside High School, Little Rock Central High School, Van Buren High School, and The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in Hot Springs.

The Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Johnson County awarded 14 college scholarships worth a combined $10,500 during a ceremony held Jan. 28 on the University of the Ozarks campus in Clarksville. The University of Arkansas System bestowed the title of vice chancellor emeritus to Mark Horn of Fort Smith.

Corrin Troutman has been promoted to the executive director for The Peel Compton Foundation.

With 11 years of experience at the foundation, Troutman will continue to oversee staff members, volunteers and day-to-day operations at The Peel Mansion Museum and Heritage Gardens.

She is a graduate of the University of Arkansas with a degree in horticultural science and a graduate of the Leadership Benton County program. She is also a member of the Bentonville Garden Club, the National Public Garden Association, Arkansas Certified Nursery & Landscaper Association, Northwest Arkansas Emerging Leaders, Benton County Extension Council and a mentor for the Boys and Girls Club HLM teen unit.

She is married to Ron Troutman and lives in Fayetteville.

Smith named to Dean's List

Harrison Smith of Fayetteville has been named to the fall semester Dean's List at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. Smith is a student in the university's College of Continuing Education.

Horn receives emeritus status

The University of Arkansas System bestowed the title of vice chancellor emeritus to Mark Horn of Fort Smith during a meeting held Feb. 17 on the UAFS campus.

Horn, who retired in June from his position as the university's vice chancellor for university relations, received the title in recognition of his 22 years of work as an administrator at the university, making him the first UAFS employee to receive an emeritus title from the UA system.

Currently, Horn serves as the director of Leadership Fort Smith, where he is overseeing its transition to the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Benefit aids Dean's rehab

"We've Got Dan's Back," a series of benefits for Dan Dean, will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. March 7 at Ozark Folkways in Winslow and from 5 to 11:30 p.m. March 8 at George's Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville. Both events will feature silent auctions, food and multiple musical performances. All proceeds will benefit Dean's medical and rehabilitation costs from a serious spinal injury. There will be $10 donation collected at the door.

The Ozark Folkways benefit will include musical performances by Shannon Wurst, Still on the Hill, Jesse Dean, Dave Baer, Susan Shore and Michael Cochran, food provided by local supporters and a silent auction.

The George's Majestic Lounge benefit will include musical performances by Jeff Kearney, Cutty Rye, Ozark Orchestra, Randall Shreve, Rochelle Bradshaw and Hypnotic, food provided by Greenhouse Grille, Farmer's Table, Wood Stone Craft Pizza, Arsagas Depot, Apple Blossom Brewing Company and Hammontree's, plus a large silent auction.

Dean is known by many as a local musician, architect and bicycle advocate. In early February, he suffered a fall that resulted in a severe spinal injury.

Mathes wins

scholarship

Emma Mathes, a National Merit Scholar from Fayetteville, who with fellow student Daniel Colina created Quasar, a researcher who can create pockets of intense gravity, earned a $1,000 Clark Van Pelt Scholarship from Element X, a motion design studio in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas.

The scholarship is for any student enrolled in a college degree program for 2-D/3-D animation, visual FX, motion graphics or game design.

Mathes even came up with a backstory for Quasar, aka Quinlan "Quinn" Black, who immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland as a teenager, earned a doctorate in quantum physics and led a team of scientists in black hole research while still in his 20s.

In high school, Mathes used her skills to create Web comics after she and some friends dreamed up a steampunk universe, complete with time travel and aliens.

Davis named

to Dean's List

Celeste Davis of Charleston, a fourth-year student in Creighton University's School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, was named to the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions Dean's List for fall 2014.

Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the School of Pharmacy and Health Professions Dean's List.

UAFS trio

Three University of Arkansas at Fort Smith students showcased their research at the Arkansas state capital during the 2015 STEM Posters at the Capitol event in Little Rock.

Osman Martinez of Fort Smith, Daniel Schwartz of Fort Smith and Shannon Wiley of Greenwood participated in the event, which featured undergraduate students from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs at universities across the state discussing their research with state officials.

Martinez presented research on a motor drive he designed for an electric car, while Schwartz displayed his work on implementing wireless guidance via Wi-Fi to the Mars Rover. Wiley researched the foraging ecology of the Swainson's thrush during its spring migration through Arkansas.

in 'The Giver'

Joseph Pierson, a sophomore from Van Buren will be among Concordia (Neb.) University students presenting a play adaptation of Lois Lowry's science fiction novel "The Giver" on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the Studio Theatre on the lower level of the music building. He is a crew member working on scenery.

Nicolette Dillard of Lamar was recently named as a 2014-15 Who's Who Among Students at Southern Arkansas University.

Dillard is a senior agriculture business major.

On campus, Dillard is vice president of Collegiate Farm Bureau, second vice president of Sigma Alpha, vice president of Agriculture Business Club, and a member of Phi Beta Lambda.

Laura Farrell, a biology major from Fort Smith, has been named to the University of Dallas Dean's List for the Fall 2014 semester for earning a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

The University of Dallas, located in a metropolitan area of nearly seven million people, is a leading Catholic university recognized for academic excellence.

Emily Webb of West Fork, a member of the class of 2017 at Washington and Lee University, has earned Dean's List status for the fall term 2014.

Dean's list status at Washington and Lee represents a term grade-point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Anna Askegaard of Farmington was named to the Wartburg College 2014 fall term Dean's List.

The college, located in Waverly, Iowa, recognized 521 students for the fall term.

Mariah Efurd of Alma was named to the fall 2014 Honors List at Mary Baldwin College.

Students named to the Honors List earned grade point averages of 3.75 to 4.00. To be eligible, a student must be a degree candidate and must have earned at least 12 semester hours for the grading period.
