Outdoors: NWA fishing report

Beaver Lake: Winter weather has kept fishing activity to a minimum this week.

James Whittle at Hook, Line and Sinker said few anglers have ventured out on Beaver Lake. He recommends using Alabama rigs or jerk baits to catch black bass. Points are good areas to try.

Target the midlake area for crappie. Fish 10 to 25 feet deep around brush or docks with minnows or jigs, Whittle said.

Try for striped bass with brood minnows or shad on the south half of the lake.

Garland Villines at Hickory Creek Marina said no one is fishing. Crappie were biting fair before cold weather hit, but anglers were fishing long and hard to catch a few keepers. Try minnows or jigs 5 to 20 feet deep. Good jig colors are a black or red body with a chartreuse tail.

Beaver tailwater: Lisa Mullins at the Beaver Dam Store said the best lures for trout are small olive-colored jigs, Trout Magnets and Colorado spoons.

Midges are the best flies. For bait, go with yellow or white Power Bait tipped with a waxworm.

Lake Fayetteville: Dolly Black at Lake Fayetteville boat dock said no one is fishing. Try small jigs for crappie or jerk baits for black bass.

Lake Sequoyah: Mike McBride at Lake Sequoyah bait shop said crappie were biting well before the cold weather. Try minnows or jigs 4 to 8 feet deep. Use jerk baits for black bass.

Swepco Lake: Kenny Stroud in Siloam Springs recommends using soft plastics 2 to 20 feet deep. A few anglers are fishing at night with large plastic worms and catching some big bass.

Siloam Springs Lake: Stroud said crappie are biting small jigs.

Bella Vista: Justin McClelland at Hook, Line and Sinker in Bella Vista said black bass are biting jerk baits at all Bella Vista lakes.

Trout are biting at Lake Brittany on Power Bait and small spoons.

Eastern Oklahoma: The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation reports fair fishing at Grand Lake for black bass with Alabama rigs or jerk baits. Catfish are biting fair on cut bait in the main lake.
