Bus crash leaves 22 dead in China

BEIJING — A bus overturned on a highway in China’s far western region of Xinjiang, killing 22 people and injuring 38, state media said Wednesday.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the accident occurred shortly before midnight Tuesday in Kashgar prefecture. It said all of the injured were hospitalized and that the cause of the accident was being investigated.

Images on news websites attributed to state broadcaster CCTV showed the bus apparently burned in places with its chassis twisted and windows smashed. Several tires were torn or burned off, and the ground in front was strewn with debris. There was no clear indication of what caused the bus to overturn.

The accident came at the end of the annual Lunar New Year travel rush.

Calls to the Bachu County police headquarters rang unanswered Wednesday night.
