Micro grants to aid two farmer vendors

The Siloam Springs Farmers Market, a program of Main Street Siloam Springs, awarded 2015 Ozark Slow Food Micro-Grants to two vendors: Thomas Fairbanks of Opossum Hollow Produce and Roger and Jennifer Remington of R Family Farm.

The vendors were selected after a competitive process and will each receive $800 toward projects that aid the diversification and enhancement of the production and distribution of sustainably grown, locally produced food.

Fairbanks will use the matching grant toward building a layer house to bring farm-fresh, cage-free, non-genetically modified eggs to the Siloam Springs Farmers Market. Opossum Hollow Produce is a small retail-oriented farm that sells fresh vegetables, cut flowers, eggs and honey. Everything is grown without chemical sprays or fertilizers.

The Remingtons will apply the money toward building an egg-washing machine. R Family Farm is a pasture-based farm supplying the local community with beef, pork, chicken, eggs and raw milk. Their animals are free of antibiotics, genetic modifications, steroids and growth hormones.

The Siloam Springs Farmers Market hosts a winter market in which customers can pre-order products for indoor Saturday pickups at 103 E. Alpine St., Suite 2, downtown.
