Basketball: Tigers too strong for Haas Hall

CEDARVILLE -- Haas Hall Academy refused to go down without a fight Saturday. But the team the Mastiffs were battling had just a little too much muscle in the end.

West Fork used its strength in the frontcourt to fight off Haas Hall just after halftime in the finals of 3A-1 West district boys tournament. Despite a brief scare as the Mastiffs cut a 10-point halftime deficit down to four, the Tigers continued their recent hot streak by pulling away down the stretch in a 49-39 victory.

"Getting the ball inside has been our mantra," West Fork coach Cody Vaught said. "(Haas Hall) made it tough on us at times to get in there and score, but we were able to come up with some big offensive rebounds and get some extra possessions."

The Tigers (19-8) dominated the rebound department, as Cody Roebke and Harrison Johnson helped West Fork to a 33-22 edge on the boards, which led to several easy offensive opportunities.

"We gave up too many things on the baseline tonight," Mastiffs coach Basil Seymour-Davies said. "They had a lot of lobs in there and got a lot of loose balls.

"It took us a while to get adjusted and then anytime we'd make a push, their guards are so quick and athletic they would just keep going."

West Fork got 26 points from Ryan Roebke and 13 from Johnson, while Haas Hall was led by 15 with Lamuel Reber.

The Tigers open 3A Region North play at Danville next week as the No. 1 seed and will face Two Rivers at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Haas Hall plays Charleston on Thursday as the No. 2 seed from the 3A-1 West district.

The 3A-1 West district girls tournament showed Greenland is much more than just Kianna Thompson.

The Lady Pirates played the tournament without Thompson, their top scorer and most talented player, who sat with a shoulder injury. Plenty of other Greenland players stepped up to cap off an impressive day with a 62-45 victory Saturday against host Cedarville. Greenland secured the No. 1 seed at regionals with the win.

"Everybody knows how good Kianna is," Greenland coach Alan Barton said. "But we talked with Kim (Crown) about stepping up and she had a big game. And Kelsey Vaughn, Allie Arnold and Sarah Wright.

"They all stepped up and then we picked it up on defense."

Greenland (26-2) broke the game open with tough pressure defense just before halftime and the Lady Pirates fast-paced transition offense led to a 26-point third quarter.

Crown scored 20 points, dominating at times in the paint for Greenland, to lead all scorers. Arnold added 12 and Shanda Brown led Cedarville with 15.
