Time left to apply for district's top job

March 31 is the application deadline for candidates seeking the superintendent's job in Arkansas' newest school system, the Jacksonville/North Pulaski School District.

District board members met last week with representatives of the McPherson & Jacobson executive search firm of Omaha, Neb., to identify the qualities they want in the new chief executive.

To aid in the search, the board and consultants are asking Jacksonville and north Pulaski County residents to complete a survey about the characteristics they would like to see in a superintendent.

The survey is available through Feb. 26 on the Pulaski County Special District's website: pcssd.org.

The board is planning to select the new leader in late April. The successful applicant is expected to succeed Superintendent Bobby Lester beginning July 1. Lester was selected late last year to serve as the superintendent on a short-term basis.

Residents of Jacksonville and north Pulaski County voted in September to form a new district carved out of the Pulaski County Special district. The state Board of Education in November ordered the establishment of the district and appointed a school board but also directed that the district remain a part of the Pulaski County Special district for up to two years while planning for the division of staff, assets and debt between the two districts.

Superintendent candidate application information is available on the McPherson & Jacobson website: macnjake.com.

Quantum biology series' first topic

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in Hot Springs is hosting its annual Science and Arts Cafe Lecture Series this spring.

The series features a short lecture on a topic in an informal setting. The lecture is followed by an open, casual discussion between the lecturer and audience members. Each program is free and open to the public.

This spring's lectures will be held at the Superior Bathhouse Brewery and Distillery at 329 Central Ave. Each lecture will begin at 7 p.m., with the lecture and discussion period lasting about an hour.

The lecturers are:

• Dr. Jon Ruehle, a biology instructor at the school, who will present "Quantum Biology" on March 12. Quantum biology will reveal many mechanisms previously inexplicable to orthodox science.

• Bryan Adams, a global languages instructor at the school, will present "Crash Course in Language: French Immersion" on April 9. Adams will guide the audience through an hour of language immersion using a variety of input methods that have proved to work well for him over his years of language instruction.

• Ron Luckow, a humanities instructor at the school will present "Comic Books in America" on May 14. The session will cover the origin and evolution of the superhero in American comic books.
