I-49 work to close lane, cause delays

Demolition work will require a lane closure and short delays on Interstate 49 in Benton County next week, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews are replacing the Arkansas 264, or West Monroe Avenue, bridge over I-49 in Lowell.

In preparation, the installation of a concrete barrier wall along the I-49 southbound median shoulder beneath the overpass requires closing the southbound inside lane between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, weather permitting.

Also, northbound and southbound I-49 traffic will be stopped for 15-minute intervals during overhead demolition work to protect traffic from falling objects. Motorists should consider alternate routes, the department said.

Beginning Wednesday night and continuing nightly for two weeks between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., I-49 northbound and southbound traffic will be detoured to the Exit 78 ramps to divert traffic around the Arkansas 264 overpass while it's demolished.

The $6.1 million project, being completed under a contract with APAC-Central Inc. of Fayetteville, is expected to be completed by summer 2016.
