Light snow leaves some roads slick in north Arkansas

A system dropped light snow in parts of northern Arkansas, leaving some slick spots on roads Thursday morning.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported at 6:30 a.m. that Arkansas 25 north from Heber Springs had some snow on it as did several highways in the Harrison area. U.S. 62 and Arkansas 5 near Mountain Home were said to have ice or ice patches on them.

All the routes were reported as being "mostly clear" with some wintry conditions.

Official snow totals around the state weren't yet in, but they were expected to range from just a dusting up to a couple tenths of an inch, said Jeff Hood, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in North Little Rock. He said it fell roughly in an area from Siloam Springs to Harrison to Batesville with a few flurries extending as far south as Conway.

Thursday was expected to stay chilly with highs across the state in the 30s and 40s. But, Hood said, the state will warm up "dramatically" in the coming days. Highs in the 60s, and even a few 70s, are expected Saturday through Monday.

So might Arkansas escape the season without a major winter storm?

"Definitely too early [to say that], unfortunately," Hood said. "We've seen snow as late as March in recent years, so we're just going to have to wait and see what happens."
