Daly hospitalized

John Daly (Dardanelle, Arkansas Razorbacks) collapsed Saturday near the end of a round of golf in Mississippi and was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Daly, 49, was playing in a local tournament at Deerfield Golf Club in Canton, Miss, just north of Jackson. Billy Allen, a friend who was with Daly at the hospital, said the two-time major champion's vital signs were good but doctors were checking on possible injuries to his ribs and fingers. Deerfield club pro Leigh Brannan, who was at the tournament, said Daly was having trouble with the heat and had some difficulty breathing before being taken to the hospital. Temperatures were near 90 degrees in the Jackson area on Saturday.

Anderson picks up rare title

Second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa won his first title in more than three years when he beat French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4, 7-5 in the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Open on Saturday. Anderson, ranked 15th, needed just 92 minutes to secure his third career ATP World Tour tournament title, and his first since winning at Delray Beach, Fla., on March 4, 2012. Since his 2012 title, Anderson was winless in seven finals before Saturday's victory at the Wake Forest Tennis Center, including losses at Memphis and Queen's Club in London this year.

• Second-seeded Petra Kvitova won her second consecutive Connecticut Open title Saturday, beating fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova 6-7 (6), 6-2, 6-2 in the all-Czech Republic final in New Haven, Conn. It's the third time Kvitova has won the tournament, putting her one behind Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki for the tournament record. Kvitova won in 2012 and lost to Simona Halep in the 2013 final. In the doubles final, Germany's Julia Goerges and the Czech Republic's Lucie Hradecka beat Taiwan's Chia-Jung Chuang and China's Chen Liang 6-3, 6-1.

Crash leaves rider in coma

Belgian rider Kris Boeckmans was left in an induced coma after suffering a concussion and facial fractures from a crash during an accident-ravaged eighth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Saturday. American Tejay van Garderen also fractured his shoulder in the crash and withdrew from the race along with French sprinter Nacer Bouhanni and Ireland's Daniel Martin, who was third in the general classification. Jasper Stuyven of Belgium won a sprint finish by a bike length to claim the 113.4-mile stage in 4 hours, 6 minutes, while Esteban Chaves retained the leader's jersey despite both going down in the accident. The unexpected pileup in the peloton happened on a straightaway 31 miles before the finish of a stage whose biggest threat was supposed to be the sun, not the tarmac. Boeckmans, 28, ended up lying on his side and his Lotto-Soudal team said he was taken to a hospital in the southern region of Murcia.
