Allen picked as OBU coach

Wrestling

Todd Allen was named Ouachita Baptist’s new wrestling coach Friday.

Allen most recently coached at Cumberland State University, an NAIA school in Lebanon, Tenn. Allen coached six NAIA All-Americans there, including one national champion and one runner-up. He spent four seasons at Cumberland State.

Allen was an NAIA All-American in 2005 and 2006 at Cumberland State.

UALR falls in season opener

UALR lost its season opener to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis on Friday in Lexington, Ky., 27-29, 25-18, 20-25, 24-26.

Carolee Dillard and Edina Selimovic each had 11 kills for the Trojans (0-1), while Miona Milovanovic and Marina Avram added 10 kills. Megan Mathis had 36 assists.

UALR will play Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. and Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. today.

Arkansas sweeps McNeese State

Arkansas (1-0) won its season opener 25-20, 25-11, 25-21 over McNeese State on Friday at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville.

Pilar Victoria led the Razorbacks with 12 kills. Kori Ortiz had a team-high 16 digs and Chanell Clark-Bibbs led the team with five blocks.

ASU opens winning twice

Arkansas State swept Southeast Missouri State and Missouri-Kansas City on Friday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

ASU first beat Southeast Missouri State 25-20, 25-10, 25-16 and then Missouri-Kansas City 25-20, 26-24, 25-22 at the Redhawks Invitational. Darby Graff led ASU with 13 kills in the victory over Southeast Missouri State, while Drew Jones added 12 kills and Mallory Warrington had 33 assists.

Lyon splits at Oklahoma Wesleyan

Lyon College lost 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-21, 25-14) to Oklahoma Wesleyan, but defeated Southwestern Christian 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15).

Makenzie Sharp had 17 kills in both matches. Emily Sprick had 49 assists in both matches. Madisson Williams had 14 digs. Drew Jones had 12 kills to lead ASU over Missouri-Kansas City.

Ellenwood leads Razorbacks by Yale

Ashleigh Ellenwood had three goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory Friday over Yale at Reese Stadium in New Haven, Conn.

Ellenwood’s three-goal game was the first for a Razorback since Julie Williford, who had three in 2001.

Ellenwood’s goals came in the first minute off a free kick, in the 41st minute to give Arkansas a 2-1 halftime lead and in the 59th minute. She assisted on Reece Christopherson’s goal in the 71st minute.

Yale’s only goal came in the 18th minute from Griff Sofia off a corner kick.

Arkansas (3-0-0) plays at Penn State on Sunday.

UALR edges Murray State

Caitlyn Eddy and Shannon Shields scored goals for UALR in a 2-1 victory over Murray State on Friday night at the Coleman Sports and Recreation Complex in Little Rock.

Shields’ goal came in the 54th minute after Murray State tied the game at 1-1 in the 40th minute on a goal by Marissa Burroughs. Eddy’s goal came on a corner kick in the fifth minute.

UALR (2-1) heads to Oklahoma on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.

UCA defeats ASU in double overtime

Central Arkansas defeated Arkansas State 3-2 in double overtime Friday night at the Stephens Soccer Complex in Conway.

UCA’s Chele Naudin was awarded a penalty kick in the 102nd minute after Arkansas State was called for a hand ball and put it into the net for the game-winning goal.

Arkansas State led 2-0 in the first half on goals by Arianna Dell Carpini and Katey Carmichael in the 29th and 33rd minutes.

Central Arkansas scored seconds later on a goal by Naudin to make it 2-1.

The Bears tied the game in the 62nd minute on a goal by Dayna Mounie.

Arkansas State (1-1-1) hosts Murray State on Sunday, while Central Arkansas (1-2) hosts Louisiana-Monroe, also on Sunday.
