15 applicants listed in job search at UA

A list of applicants released Wednesday for the chancellor's job at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville includes a provost at one of the nation's largest public universities and the former top leader of a university in Dallas.

The university and the UA System released the names, titles and institutions of 15 people in response to a request made Friday by the Democrat-Gazette under the state's public disclosure laws.

The advertisement for the position states in part: "The selection process will continue until the position is filled and applications are encouraged to be submitted by August 14, 2015." On Monday, the university said in a news release that the search is still in the recruiting stage. The recruiting stage includes receiving and reviewing applications, according to the university.

The applicant names and affiliations released Wednesday are:

• Ronald T. Brown, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, University of North Texas System.

• Charles C̶a̶r̶v̶e̶r Canver*, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Duke University Health Systems/Duke University School of Medicine.

• Joe G. Delap, vice provost, dean of graduate studies and professor, Jackson State University.

• Arthur B. Ellis, provost and chairman, professor of chemistry, City University of Hong Kong.

• John Frederick, provost and vice president for academic affairs, University of Texas at San Antonio.

• Leslie D. Hannah, languages and liberal arts; director of Cherokee programs, Northeastern State University.

• Walter Sir Anthony Johnson Jr., chairman, mathematics and computer science department, Science and Technology Center, Coppin State University.

• Andrew Rogerson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, Sonoma State University.

• Joseph E. Steinmetz, executive vice president and provost, Ohio State University.

Brown, with the University of North Texas System, served as president of the University of North Texas at Dallas from July 2013 until this summer. In July, the university system announced that Brown, a psychologist, would be the three-institution system's associate vice chancellor for academic affairs starting in August.

According to a report earlier this month published by The Dickinson Press, Brown has also applied to be president at Dickinson State University in North Dakota. But a subsequent report did not list Brown as among a group of 10 selected for interviews.

The interview group did include UA applicant Cheryl Lovell, listed by UA as being formerly the president of Rocky Vista University in Colorado.

Steinmetz, with Ohio State University, which had an enrollment of more than 56,000 students as of 2012, was linked in February to what at the time was the vacant University of Texas at Austin presidency. The Austin American-Statesman, citing unnamed sources, reported that Steinmetz was included on a list of finalists for the job.

The February report included a comment from a spokesman for Ohio State University that Steinmetz had decided to withdraw from consideration.
