Interchange work to close Interstate 49 lanes

LITTLE ROCK -- Work to build an interchange connecting Interstate 49 to the new U.S. 412 northern bypass in Northwest Arkansas will require overnight lane closures on I-49 for four nights beginning today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

The lane closures were announced last week, but the department issued a news release Monday clarifying that some of the lane closures will begin earlier than the agency initially said.

Installation of a precast barrier wall along northbound and southbound I-49 from north of Wagon Wheel Road in Springdale to south of Arkansas 264 will require closing lanes within the work zone from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly through Saturday, weather permitting.

Northbound I-49 will be reduced to one lane Tuesday night and southbound I-49 will be reduced to one lane Wednesday night, the department said. The outside lanes in both directions will be closed for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. The department initially said they would be closed on Thursday and Friday nights.

When completed, the $100.6 million bypass project will extend 4 miles from I-49 to Arkansas 112 and provide an east-west route north of the Springdale metropolitan area, the department said.
