Helpful Hints

DEAR HELOISE: I've fostered dogs and cats, and it's so rewarding! It's a commitment, but is worth it to save a deserving animal that otherwise might be euthanized.

Some animals need fostering for extra socialization and playtime, like litters of new puppies or kittens, or animals that have fear and anxiety issues. Normally, once an animal is in a home instead of the chaotic shelter, the fear will subside, and they are calmer.

Check with shelters or rescue groups for requirements. Mine wanted to ensure that I would care for the animal and attend adoption events. I agreed that it was all right to give my phone number and email to potential adopters. Usually the shelter pays for medical expenses.

It's hard to say goodbye to my fosters once they get adopted, but I'm happy they are going on to a great life, thanks in part to fostering!

DEAR READER: Woof, meow, chirp, squeak! Fostering is special, because it takes a very special person to "let go" when the time is right. Big Heloise Hug to all who foster!

DEAR HELOISE: I have a lot of makeup and need to eliminate some. How do I know when to toss old makeup?

DEAR READER: Good question, and one that might surprise most folks. Once opened, the more moisture in makeup -- think liquid foundation or eyeliner -- the shorter the life. The closer it comes to the eye, more caution should be used about how long to keep the makeup. There is a higher probability of makeup contamination in the eye area than others. Of course, temperature (think hot Texas or Arizona) or humidity (Portland or along the coastline) plays a factor, too.

Generally, if stored in a cool, dark place, not a humid or bright bathroom, each has a little different life span. Pencils, powder blush and eye shadow last much longer than any liquid or even mascara.

Bottom line: Does it smell funny, look different, or is it gloppy or lumpy? Toss!

P.S.: Lipstick? Don't ask!

DEAR HELOISE: I keep a spare pair of glasses, some sandwich bags and scissors in the bedroom. I can read care directions on garments with the glasses; scissors cut tags and loose strings; and the bags hold a myriad of things.

DEAR HELOISE: I like to decorate my rooms with name-brand tissue boxes, but they are expensive. When they are nearly done, simply open one end and refill them with store-brand tissues! I close the end with double-stick tape. Ta-da!
