Enjoy the Buckin': PBR event promises excitement for bull riding fans

PBR event promises excitement for bull riding fans

Does 45 bulls equal 45 bull rides? Doubtful. The bulls' form of subtraction can be a pretty hard problem to solve.

The annual Buckin' in the Ozarks on Saturday, an event sanctioned by the Professional Bull Riders, promises to be thrilling for the fans. The event showcases 35 riders, with the top 10 returning for a final or "short" round.

"We describe it as 'a rock concert that is friendly enough for family'," says Jeff Lee, the event's promoter and announcer. "It has a little bit different feel than the (Rodeo of the Ozarks). It's more upbeat, more intense. There's no time for fans to take a deep breath."

L.J. Jenkins brings his brand of bulls to Springdale as the stock contractor. Jenkins retired from bull riding this year, with a record of competing in the PBR season-ending World Championship event 10 times and winning the event in 2006. He has raised bulls on an Oklahoma ranch for eight years and earned the respect he gets from bull riders and other contractors.

"He's always been into bucking bulls, even as a bull rider," Lee says. "Most guys do it after they retire."

The local event is part of the Touring Pro Division of the PBR -- sort of a minor league, Lee explains. Cowboys who ride here hope to earn enough money and points to put them in the top 35 in the world at any point in the season. Those top riders then are eligible to compete in the Built Ford Tough series events. And some of those 35 might ride in Springdale, working to earn their own money and points.

PBR fans get to meet Jenkins, his brother Dustin -- the bullfighter for the event -- and other cowboys at Fan Day from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Sam's Furniture in Springdale. They will sign autographs for fans. The event also features pony rides, rides on a mechanical bull and free food and drinks.
