Heartwood features glass-work artisans at open house

"I love to get out and interact with people instead of just being locked in my studio," says Hank Barnes, a local craftsman and one of the artists whose work will be featured at the stained glass and mosaics showcase Saturday at Heartwood Gallery. "I think people who will actually go to a gallery like to talk to the artist and see that the work is actually handcrafted. That's really cool to me that there are people who still care about that aspect of the work."

The gallery, located on Government Avenue in Fayetteville, is a cooperative that features the work of local artists in painting, fibers, wood work and jewelry, among many others. Barnes says there is something there for every art appreciator and something in every price range.

Carol Hart, local painter and member of Heartwood's co-op, says the gallery tries to host meet and greets every month in hopes that more people will discover the haven for local art. Although the gallery is in its 13th year, Hart says it's "kind of stuck away in south Fayetteville" where many people might not expect to find a gallery.

"I think a lot of people who visit for the first time are surprised by the variety [we have] and really by the quality of the art too," Hart says.

Barnes will be joined by four other artisans for the open house: Vanessa Ryerse, StephanieTempest, Janet Greeson and gallery founder Anita Hejtmanek. The artists will be discussing their methods and answering questions about the work. Ryerse will be leading a demonstration of how she cuts china pieces for her mosaics. Guests are welcome to bring their own chipped china for Ryerse to cut into pieces for their own projects.

"As artists, what we really look forward to is being able to interact with the public and when people ask us specific questions about our art," Hart says. "So I think these interactions are a really wonderful thing that happens at our gallery."
