ROYALS 3, REDS 1 (13)

CINCINNATI -- Jarrod Dyson wasn't even in Kansas City's original starting lineup Tuesday night.

Dyson, who started after Omar Infante was scratched with back spasms, scored the tie-breaking run from first base on pitcher Ryan Mattheus' throwing error and the Royals went on to a 3-1, 13-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

"That's why, every day, you've got to show up ready to play," said Dyson, who went 2 for 5 with 1 stolen base. "The unexpected can happen, and you've got to prepare for it."

Ben Zobrist tied the game 1-1 with a home run in the ninth inning off Reds closer Aroldis Chapman who had converted 56 consecutive save opportunities at home since blowing one against Houston on Sept. 7, 2012.

"I didn't do anything different," Chapman said through assistant trainer-interpreter Tomas Vera. "All I can tell you is I had a bad day. I made a mistake."

Dyson led off the 13th with a single and scored when Mattheus (1-4) threw a sacrifice bunt by Kris Medlen (1-0) down the right field line.

Greg Holland finished for his 27th save.

Zobrist, who scored the winning run in the 10th inning of Kansas City's 4-3 victory over the Angels on Sunday, stunned the crowd of 28,719 by leading off the ninth with his 10th home run of the season on a 2-1 pitch from Chapman.

"He's made a pretty big difference," Manager Ned Yost said of Zobrist, acquired from Oakland on July 28. "He's become a pretty big piece for us."

Zobrist's approach was the key, Reds Manager Bryan Price said.

"The thing about Zobrist is he knows the strike zone, and he didn't get behind," Price said.

Lorenzo Cain followed Zobrist with a single and stole second and third while Eric Hosmer was striking out. Cain was ruled safe on the rundown that started with Salvador Perez's grounder to second baseman Brandon Phillips, but Cain was ruled out after a replay review that lasted just under 3 1/2 minutes.

Reds starter Raisel Iglesias allowed 1 runner past second base while scattering 3 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts over 7 innings. He extended his streak of consecutive scoreless innings to 12, dating to the first inning of his last start on Aug. 12 in San Diego.

Eugenio Suarez homered off Kansas City right-hander Edison Volquez with one out in the first, giving Cincinnati a 1-0 lead with his eighth home run of the season.

Volquez, who played for the Reds, allowed 4 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in 6 innings.

METS 5, ORIOLES 3 Jacob deGrom took a four-hitter into the eighth inning, Curtis Granderson hit two solo home runs and New York beat host Baltimore to snap a three-game losing streak. Granderson connected off Kevin Gausman (2-5) on the game's second pitch and homered again in the fifth, then deGrom made the lead stand for the first-place Mets.

BLUE JAYS 8, PHILLES 5 Josh Donaldson hit two home runs, Edwin Encarnacion also went deep and visiting Toronto beat Philadelphia. Donaldson has 33 home runs and leads the majors with 91 RBI. The AL wild card-leading Blue Jays have won 13 of 15. They entered one game behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

ANGELS 5, WHITE SOX 3 Kole Calhoun and Albert Pujols homered in the first inning against John Danks, and Los Angeles held on to beat visiting Chicago. Garrett Richards (12-9) was charged with 3 runs -- 2 earned -- and 8 hits in 7-plus innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks.

YANKEES 8, TWINS 4 Alex Rodriguez hit a slump-busting grand slam in the seventh inning, and host New York rallied from a three-run deficit against a depleted Minnesota bullpen to beat the Twins. Rodriguez extended his major league record for grand slams, hitting the 25th of his career into the Yankees bullpen off J.R. Graham (0-1) to put New York up 5-4.

RED SOX 9, INDIANS 1 Travis Shaw went 4 for 4, Mookie Betts drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double and Boston beat visiting Cleveland. Brock Holt had three hits and two RBI for the Red Sox. Eduardo Rodriguez (7-5) pitched 8 solid innings, allowing 1 run and 6 hits while striking out 5 and not walking a batter.

MARINERS 3, RANGERS 2 Hisashi Iwakuma followed his no-hitter by limiting host Texas to two runs and five hits over seven innings as Seattle beat the Rangers. All of Seattle's scoring came in the first inning on three extra-base hits, including Seth Smith's 10th home run of the season.

ASTROS 3, RAYS 2 (10) Marwin Gonzalez had three hits and his 10th-inning leadoff home run lifted Houston to a victory over visiting Tampa Bay. The game was tied at 2-2 when Gonzalez connected off All-Star closer Brad Boxberger (4-9), sending a full-count fastball into the seats in right field to give Houston the victory.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

GIANTS 2, CARDINALS 0 Ryan Vogelsong pitched six innings of two-hit ball and ace Madison Bumgarner keyed a seventh-inning rally with his first career pinch hit, helping San Francisco beat host St. Louis. The Giants have won six of eight and handed the Cardinals just their 19th home loss compared with 45 victories.

MARLINS 9, BREWERS 6 Ichiro Suzuki had his first four-hit game in over two years, and Cole Gillespie drove in a season-high three runs to lead visiting Miami to a victory over Milwaukee. Suzuki was 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored for his first 4-hit game since July 28, 2013.

NATIONALS 15, ROCKIES 6 Yunel Escobar homered and drove in four runs to help Washington end a six-game losing streak with a victory over host Colorado. Michael A. Taylor hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning and the Nationals capitalized on a lack of control by Rockies pitchers in a four-run eighth to turn a close game into a rout.

PIRATES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 8 (15) Pedro Florimon tripled home Francisco Cervelli with two outs in the bottom of the 15th to lift Pittsburgh to a victory over visiting Arizona. Starling Marte and Jung Ho Kang homered for Pittsburgh, which won despite blowing a late five-run lead.
