Phyllis Barrier

Where I live: My husband, Michael, and I moved back to Little Rock in 2003, after living in the Washington area for almost 30 years. We wanted to be in the Heights near our parents and where we both had grown up. We found a 1929-vintage house that had been recently renovated in the Prospect Terrace neighborhood.

Occupation: I worked full time for 30 years as a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and writer, and then consultant. Now I volunteer with a number of organizations, including the Pulaski County Master Gardeners and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. I served on the committee that developed the Arkansas Symphony Guild playing cards. Information about the cards can be found at: www.arkansassymphony.org/cards.

My favorite space is: My vegetable garden.

Why: I had a community garden plot in Alexandria, Va., one mile from our home. I feel very lucky to have a 7-by-31-foot garden plot in the Heights that gets eight hours of sunlight. I have an almost 12-month garden. Right now, I'm growing edamame, cucumbers, green beans, okra and zinnias -- also Thai and Italian basil, lemon thyme and oregano.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Add more rock and increase the height of the garden, as well as improve the drip system that I'm using for irrigation.
