Asencio helped San Antonio (50-65, 19-26) to a 4-0 lead but the Naturals cut the lead to 4-2 in the seventh inning on a bases loaded RBI sacrifice fly by Parker Morin and a Missions error on the play. The Naturals loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning but Missions reliever Eury De La Rosa struckout Frank Schwindel and Ramon Torres to end the game.
Northwest Arkansas finished with six hits and they committed three errors. The Naturals were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
"I thought our energy level was poor tonight," said Naturals manager Vance Wilson. "We were dead, and we didn't play well defensively. Then, we just couldn't get the big hit."
Luis Domoromo started the Missions sixth inning with a double and Benji Gonzalez followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Alberth Martinez then hit a grounder to shortstop for what appeared to be a Naturals double play but Raul Mondesi bobbled the ball as Domoromo scored for a 1-0 lead.
Gonzalez scored on a two-out double by Asencio for a 2-0 lead and Asencio then scored on an error by third baseman Hunter Dozier that upped the lead to 3-0. Asencio then made it a 4-0 lead with a two-out RBI single in the seventh.
SHORT HOPS
• Naturals starter Brooks Pounders (1-2, 2.08 ERA) took the loss in his third start of the season. Pounders, who is coming back from Tommy John Surgery, gave up seven hits and two of his three runs were earned. He struckout four and walked two in 5 2/3 innings of work.
• San Antonio finished with 11 hits, including four doubles. No. 9 hitter Tyson Gillies had two of the doubles.
Extra Bases: Naturals second baseman Torres kept the Missions off the scoreboard in the third when he threw out Gillis at home on a fielder's choice by Benji Gonzalez. ... The pitch clock was not working during Tuesday's game. ... Naturals Morin and Torres were thrown out by Missions catcher Griff Erickson while trying to steal second base in the third inning.
