2 killed in crashes on Arkansas roads

A motorcyclist died Friday when he was hit by a car after pulling out of a driveway on U.S. 71 near Mena, Arkansas State Police reported.

According to a report released Monday, 68-year-old Daniel James Flaherty pulled out of 3091 U.S. 71 on his Triumph motorcycle to head north at 4:45 p.m. Flaherty failed to yield, police said, and a 2000 Ford traveling south struck him.

Flaherty was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, where he was pronounced dead.

State police also reported Monday that a Monette man was killed Sunday when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a truck.

Thurman Knight, 32, was driving a 2003 ATV south on Craighead County Road 502 in Black Oak about 5:30 p.m., and a minor driving a 2014 Chevrolet truck was traveling west on Craighead County Road 535. The two collided where the roads intersected, police said.

Knight was pronounced dead at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro. The driver of the truck was not injured.
