FORT SMITH -- Sebastian County will begin looking for a new election coordinator for the fourth time in less than two years after the resignation of Suzanne Morgan.
Morgan said Thursday that she informed County Judge David Hudson last week that she was leaving effective Aug. 28. She said she was moving to Texas, where her husband has a job opportunity.
She said she told commissioners that she would be on hand to help with the Sept. 15 school election and would train the new coordinator.
Morgan conceded that she was leaving at a crucial time. The county is now switching to all-electronic voting and purchasing new voting equipment as part of a pilot program under the secretary of state's office.
Election Commission Vice Chairman Gunner Delay said learning the new voting system will present a challenge to the commission and county clerk's office, as well as the new coordinator. He said the commission hoped the new coordinator would be in place for the Nov. 12 special election in Greenwood.
Delay said while the coordinator works for the commission, it is up to the county judge to hire the coordinator.
Morgan became election coordinator in June 2014, succeeding Robert Cowan, who served in the position for about a month.
Cowan had taken over as coordinator for David Mansell, who held the position from January 2014 to March 2014, when he resigned after an error showed up on the May primary election ballot.
