UAMS picks dean for nursing college

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has named a dean for its nursing college.

Patricia Cowan will lead the college on or before Dec. 1 and will earn $240,000 annually, UAMS said. Cowan is replacing Lorraine Frazier, who left the academic medical center in January. UAMS officials in January named Jean McSweeney, an associate dean for research and director of the nursing college's doctoral program, as the interim leader, according to a news release.

Cowan -- whose research interests include lifestyle interventions for overweight youths and adults -- will arrive at UAMS from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis. There, she worked as a professor and an associate dean for academic and student affairs in the College of Nursing, the news release states.

ASU begins work on new Unity Park

Arkansas State University has started construction of a new Unity Park, officials said Friday.

The university is moving Unity Park, a gathering place for the Jonesboro school's fraternities and sororities, to a larger site closer to the Greek life part of the campus, according to a news release. The new Humanities and Social Sciences building was encroaching on the old Unity Park site, prompting the relocation, the release states.

The new park will include a 60-foot-diameter paved plaza, benches for each group and a sandstone seat wall on the perimeter.

"The new Unity Park allows the university to provide an area for members of the [National Pan-Hellenic Council] to have more space for events," ASU's vice chancellor for Student Affairs, Rick Stripling, said in a statement. "We worked during the spring semester with the student leaders of NPHC, their advisers and our chapters to get input and feedback on the design and location of the park."

Atkinson takes over admissions at OBU

A longtime Ouachita Baptist University staff member will lead the admissions and registrar's office.

Susan Atkinson, who has worked at the Arkadelphia university for more than a decade, stepped into her new role Saturday. She is succeeding Judy Jones, who is retiring after 20 years as registrar and director of admissions, according to a news release.

Atkinson has worked as an administrative assistant to the dean of the School of Humanities for 11 years and was named the private university's 2012 Support Staff Member of the Year, the news release states.
