Grant helps cover UA director's pay

FAYETTEVILLE -- A $200,000 grant from the National Science Foundation will help pay for administrative costs at a University of Arkansas at Fayetteville center focused on power systems research.

The competitive federal grant to UA's Center of Excellence in Grid-connected Advanced Power Electronic Systems will support the salary of T.A. Walton, managing director for the center.

UA is the lead site for the two-university center, sometimes referred to as GRAPES, which also has a site at the University of South Carolina. The center's executive director is Alan Mantooth, a UA electrical engineering professor.

Walton, who is based at UA, earns $140,810 yearly, UA spokesman Steve Voorhies said. His job involves working with research faculty to recruit industry, and he also works on strategic planning and intellectual property issues.
