Photo seminarset in Eureka

The 2015 Mid-America Photography Symposium (MapSym) is coming to Eureka Springs May 16-17. Deadline to register is Friday.

World-renowned photographers will hold classes and workshops during the event, which also will include special model shoots, a trade show, equipment checkout, a special session by Canon Explorer of Light Stephen Johnson and a keynote dinner by Mike Moats. The Ozark Photo Challenge is going on as well, with the winners announced at MapSym.

GriefSharestarts May 3

GriefShare will be starting a new 13-week session on May 3 for those who have lost a loved one or a close friend. The sessions are held in the lower level of the Holiday Island Community Church Fellowship Hall located at 188 Stateline Drive, Holiday Island. The classes will run from 2 to 4 p.m. each Sunday.

This is a Bible-based study that requires a workbook that costs $15.

Credit Counseling of Arkansas will conduct its monthly Home Buyer Education class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Washington County Extension Building, 2536 McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville.

The class is free and open to anyone who wants to learn more about the process of purchasing a home.

There will be professionals from the real estate, insurance and lending professions available to provide information and answer questions. The class is a pre-requisite to the down payment assistance programs offered through the Arkansas Development Finance Authority.

Writing Schoolstarts classes

The Village Writing School will kick off another eight-week series of classes at the Jess Odom Community Center in Maumelle.

Creative Writing I will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday nights beginning April 28. Designed for both beginning and established writers, this series will cover such elements as character development, setting, dialogue and voice.

Creative Writing II will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday nights beginning April 27 and cover such topics as subtext and the 15 steps of self-editing.

Business Writing will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning April 29 and will target specific writing skills for success in business and school.

All classes will be taught by Thomas Eaton, who holds a doctorate in education and has taught creative writing at the university level. He is also the author of a forthcoming series of western novels.

The Village Writing School is located in Eureka Springs with associate programs in Maumelle and Rogers/Bentonville.

Support groupconsiders HIV

For the May meeting, PFLAG will provide information about HIV/AIDS. Dale Manning of NWA Hope will talk about "Myths & Facts of HIV/AIDS." He will present information on how and where HIV testing is done in the local area and give practical information regarding HIV prevention.

The meeting will from 6:30 to 8 p.m. May 4 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Springdale. The program will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by an open group support meeting. The meeting is open to the public.

The Leadership Fort Smith Alumni Association invites the community to "Get on Board" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5 at the Movie Lounge EpiCenter.

Creativity classseeks children

Enrollment is open for a new Art Experience creativity class for children ages 6 to 11 and will be taught by local artist/art therapist Jo Ann Kaminsky. The class is designed to encourage imaginative thinking and develop children's natural curiosity and creativity through art projects, imaginative play and games. Children will work with paints, collage and clay to bring imagination to life.

Classes are held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays May 9 to June 6. Cost is $100 for four classes.

Fort Smith Regional Art Museum has issued a call to artists for the annual Ram Invitational. This year's theme is "Man vs. Machine: The Art of Expression and the Wired World," and the exhibit will focus on how modern technology impacts today's society.

Awards include $1,500 and a solo show at RAM for first place, $750 for second place, $300 for third place, a purchase award and people's choice award.

Deadline for submission is July 1.
