Travs' 12 runs pound Cards

Cal Towey went 2 for 5 with 4 RBI to lead the Arkansas Travelers over the Springfield Cardinals 12-5 on Friday night at Hammons Field in Springfield, Mo.

The Travs pounded out 14 hits and had a five-run third inning and a seven-run eighth inning. Brian Hernandez, Charlie Cutler, Michael Snyder and Zach Wright each had two hits.

Arkansas took a 5-0 lead in the top of the third inning on 3 hits and 2 errors.

Wright led off the inning with a walk, Drew Maggi singled and Wright scored when Sherman Johnson reached on a throwing error by Springfield first baseman Jonathan Rodriguez to make it 1-0. Chad Hinshaw walked, then Towey singled for a 2-0 lead. Hernandez followed with a two-run single to extend the Travs' lead to 4-0. Towey later scored when Cutler grounded into a double play.

Springfield cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the third on Patrick Wisdom's two-run home run.

The Travs pulled away with seven runs in the eighth inning for a 12-2 advantage.

Maggi's single made it 6-2 with one out. Johnson and Chad Hinshaw walked with the bases loaded to give the Travs a 8-2 lead. Towey followed with a three-run double for an 11-2 advantage and he scored on Snyder's RBI single.

Jacob Wilson hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to pull Springfield within 12-5 with two outs, but David Washington grounded out to end the game.

Andrew Wood (3-0) gave up 2 runs, 3 hits, struck out 1 and walked 4 in 5 innings to earn the victory for Arkansas.

Kyle Hald (0-1) was tagged for 5 runs on 5 hits in 3 innings.

Rodriguez led Springfield offensively, going 2 for 4. Jacob Wilson went 1 for 4 with 3 RBI.
