Baseball: Fayetteville stays unbeaten in 7A-West

FAYETTEVILLE -- Fayetteville needed only a few innings to show Springdale Har-Ber who's boss in the 7A-West Conference.

Cody Davenport went 4-for-4 and Andy Pagnozzi threw a three-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to a 8-3 victory over the Wildcats Tuesday at Bulldog Field. Pagnozzi held Har-Ber to without a hit until the sixth inning when Reed Fell dumped a one-out single into short right field. Josh Stephens followed with a single near the same area in right-center for Har-Ber's first run.

Davenport had two doubles and two singles for Fayetteville, which took a 4-0 lead after a three-run home run by Blake Power in the third inning. Davenport had a two-run single in the sixth when Fayetteville added four runs to take an 8-1 lead. Adam Scoggins hit a two-run home run in the seventh for the Wildcats, who were outhit 11-3 by the Bulldogs.

"We know we're always going to get a quality start on the mound and we're going to play good defense," Fayetteville coach Vance Arnold said. "At the plate, we hit the ball hard and added some extra base hits. So, I was real proud of the boys."

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn was among the fans in the stands to watch the pitching matchup between two Division 1 signees. Pagnozzi (Ole Miss) was dominant until the late innings and Weston Rogers (Arkansas) struck out six before Power unloaded with a three-run home run in the third. The shot to left field followed a two-out single by Davenport and an error at third base.

"Weston pitched real well," Har-Ber coach Ron Bradley said of his senior left-hander. "We didn't help him with our defense. We should've been out of the inning in the third, then they hit the home run to take four-run lead. They didn't make mistakes and we did."

Har-Ber began the day with some momentum after climbing into second place in the league following consecutive sweeps over Fort Smith Southside and Fort Smith Northside. But the Bulldogs controlled all aspects of the game and led throughout after taking a 1-0 edge in the first inning on a double by Davenport and a single by Grant Koch.

Fayetteville added three runs in the third and four more on four hits in the sixth against two Har-Ber relievers. Pagnozzi finished with nine strikeouts while Rogers had seven strikeouts in five innings for Har-Ber.

Game 2

Fayetteville 3, Har-Ber 2

Cody Davenport threw a four-hitter and struck out nine as Fayetteville (19-2, 10-0) completed a doubleheader sweep over the Wildcats (18-7, 6-4).

Fayetteville scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when Kurt Phillips hit Drew Tyler with the bases loaded. Har-Ber put two runners on base in the seventh before Davenport got Tyler Blackston on a tapper to the mound to end the game.

Blackston drove in Har-Ber's first run with an triple in the third. The Wildcats then tied the game 2-2 with the help of throwing error in the sixth.
