Soccer: Scoreless Bentonville-Springdale Match Postponed

BENTONVILLE --Springdale High and Bentonville were deadlocked in a scoreless tie with 38 minutes remaining when a weather delay interrupted the match and eventually led to its postponement Friday night.

The match was delayed two minutes into the second half at 7:35 p.m. because of nearby lightning. The lightning and a large amount of rain didn't let up over the course of the next 80-plus minutes, with wind gusts knocking over both teams' dugouts and rain thoroughly soaking the turf field before the match was postponed at 8:57. No make-up date had been set as of Friday night.

"Tentatively thinking that we may be able to squeeze it in at the end of the season if we don't have any more problems like this the second half of conference play," Springdale coach D.J. Beeler said. "We just need to get with each other maybe (today) and figure it out for sure. But nothing concrete yet."

The match kicked off the second half of 7A-West Conference play for both teams. Bentonville entered with a 9-1 record overall and a 6-1 conference record. Springdale is 7-5-1 overall and 3-4 in conference. Bentonville won the teams' first meeting this year 2-0 at Springdale.

Both teams failed to take advantage of several chances to score in the first half Friday, including a sequence in which Bentonville had a shot carom off the goalpost and a close-range rebound shot saved in the span of a few seconds.
