RANGERS

Scheppers activated

SEATTLE -- The Texas Rangers have activated right-hander Tanner Scheppers from the 15-day disabled list.

Texas made the move Friday before its series opener in Seattle.

Scheppers started the season on the disabled list with a right ankle sprain. He joins the team after 2 2/3 scoreless innings in three rehab appearances for Class AA Frisco.

Anthony Ranaudo had been optioned back to Class AAA Round Rock after he gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings in a start for Texas on Wednesday, a 10-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers were off Thursday.

The Rangers also transferred right-hander Kyuji Fujikawa from Frisco to Round Rock to continue his rehab from a right groin strain.

DODGERS

Corcino claimed

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed right-handed pitcher Daniel Corcino from Cincinnati and designated left-handed pitcher Ryan Dennick for assignment.

Corcino has a 45-52 record with a 4.13 ERA in 168 career minor league games in the Reds' organization. He appeared in five major league games last season. He opened this season with Class AA Pensacola, tossing a scoreless inning of relief in his only outing.

The 24-year-old pitcher was signed by the Reds as a non-drafted free agent in 2008 from the Dominican Republic.

Dennick was claimed by the Dodgers from the Reds on Wednesday. The 28-year-old pitcher has a 27-31 record with 18 saves and a 3.88 ERA in 210 career minor league games over seven seasons. He appeared in eight games for the big-league Reds last season.

The moves were announced Friday.

TWINS

Duensing on DL

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins have placed left-hander Brian Duensing on the 15-day disabled list with a strain of muscles in his rib cage.

The Twins announced on Friday that Duensing sustained an intercostal strain the day before during his appearance in the ninth inning against the Kansas City Royals. Duensing has been used as the team's left-handed specialist out of the bullpen.

It's the third setback to Twins pitchers in the first two weeks of the season. Ervin Santana has been suspended for the first 80 games and Ricky Nolasco is on the disabled list with an elbow strain.

The Twins recalled left-hander Caleb Thielbar from Class AAA Rochester to take Duensing's place. Thielbar went 5-4 with a 2.59 ERA in 103 appearances for the Twins over the previous two seasons.

BREWERS

Gomez strains hamstring

MILWAUKEE -- All-Star outfielder Carlos Gomez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Milwaukee Brewers because of a strained right hamstring.

The move was retroactive to Thursday. The Brewers held off on a roster decision until Friday, when utility man Jason Rogers was recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs.

The Brewers started a three-game series Friday in Pittsburgh.

Gomez left Wednesday's game in St. Louis with the injury and returned to Milwaukee to be examined.

The leadoff hitter was hitting .235 with a home run and six RBI in eight games. Overall, the Brewers are batting just .223 entering Friday, contributing to a 2-7 start.

Gerardo Parra will likely take over in center for Gomez. Rogers was hitting .360 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI in the minors.

BLUE JAYS

Reyes cracks rib

TORONTO -- Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes has a cracked rib on his left side and will miss this weekend's series against Atlanta.

Reyes won't play again until at least Tuesday against Baltimore. Toronto is off Monday.

Reyes believes he got hurt on a check swing last Friday against Baltimore. He said an MRI this week revealed the cracked rib and a strained muscle.

He left Thursday's game after his first at-bat.

"The doctor told me the crack in the rib is not going to get any worse," Reyes said. "What can get worse is the strain."

Manager John Gibbons said the Blue Jays hope Reyes can avoid going on the disabled list. The pain is worse when the switch-hitting Reyes bats left-handed. Toronto may see if Reyes can hit exclusively from the right side until he heals.

Ryan Goins and Steve Tolleson will now split time at shortstop. Rookie second baseman Devon Travis will become Toronto's leadoff hitter.

METS

Montero sent to Vegas

NEW YORK -- Mets reliever Rafael Montero was sent to Class AAA Las Vegas on Friday in order to work up to a spot start for New York on April 28 at Miami.

Manager Terry Collins said this is a one-time outing meant to give the starters an extra day of rest between starts. He emphasized the Mets are not going to a six-man rotation.

"Don't read any more into it than that," Collins said before New York hosted the Marlins. "Everybody backs up one turn, and we'll make decisions as we go."

The organization has said it plans to give ace Matt Harvey extra days off throughout the season in his return from Tommy John surgery. This would be the first spot.

Also, Dillon Gee, who could be traded, has not pitched well in his first two starts, going 0-1 with a 7.59 ERA, and Montero eventually could take his spot.

Collins did not rule out that Montero, who competed for a starting spot in spring training but began the season in the bullpen -- he has a 4.15 ERA in four outings -- could start again with the current rotation.

New York selected the contract of infielder Danny Muno to fill Montero's spot on the roster, giving the Mets a five-man bench.

YANKEES

Gardner still out

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- New York Yankees left fielder Brett Gardner remained out of the starting lineup Friday due to a bruised right wrist.

Gardner took batting practice before New York's series opener at Tampa Bay and said he hoped to start tonight's game.

Gardner was hit by a pitch Monday and left the game midway through New York's win over Baltimore. He had an MRI on Thursday, and the Yankees announced he sustained a bruise.

Right-hander Ivan Nova, coming back from right elbow ligament replacement surgery a year ago, threw 20 pitches in his second batting practice session at the Yankees' minor league complex in nearby Tampa.

"I'm getting closer," Nova said. "Feels awesome."

On target to return to the Yankees in June, Nova expects to throw batting practice twice next week before possibly advancing to simulated games.

Injured fifth starter Chris Capuano, on the disabled with a strained right quadriceps, will throw batting practice for the second time Sunday. Capuano could return in a month.
