Brill leads panel in UA job hunt

17 look for next chancellor

FAYETTEVILLE -- A law school professor will head the 17-person search committee appointed to help find the next chancellor for the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, according to a list of committee members released Thursday by the UA System.

Howard Brill, a faculty member at UA's School of Law since 1975, will lead a group consisting mostly of UA faculty and staff members. Brill did not respond to an email and phone message left with the law school staff seeking comment Thursday.

UA System spokesman Nate Hinkel said the search committee, whose members were appointed by UA System President Donald Bobbitt, has yet to meet.

In a March talk to UA faculty members, Bobbitt said the committee will make hiring recommendations but not the final decision on the replacement for Chancellor G. David Gearhart, who announced in January plans to retire in July.

Representing the UA System board of trustees will be Jim von Gremp, who is serving his second term on the board.

The committee includes Archie Schaffer III as a representative of the business community. Schaffer is a former executive vice president of corporate affairs for Tyson Foods Inc.

Also on the committee is Sandra Connor, who, with her husband, has served in a volunteer leadership role with the steering committee for the forthcoming Campaign Arkansas fundraising effort for UA, which has yet to have a public kickoff.

Three designated UA faculty representatives are Roger Koeppe, a chemistry professor; Gary Ferrier, an economics professor; and Julie Carrier, a professor of biological and agricultural engineering.

They are joined by Stacy Leeds, dean of UA's School of Law; Julie Cromer, senior associate athletic director for administration and sports programs and senior women's administrator; Kathy Van Laningham, vice provost for planning; Laura Jacobs, associate vice chancellor for university relations; and Melissa Harwood-Rom, dean of students.

Harwood-Rom is representing student affairs. In the March talk to UA faculty members, Bobbitt said no students would be appointed to the committee, but a representative of UA's student affairs would represent student perspectives. At the time, Bobbitt said members of the group will be asked to agree to a code of confidentiality about details discussed by the committee.

Also on the search committee is Danielle Wood, director of UA's Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance, representing university staff.

Chuck Culver, director of development for the UA System Agriculture Division, will represent the division, which is based in Little Rock.

Stephanie Streett will represent the Arkansas Alumni Association. Dan Hendrix will represent the Arkansas World Trade Center. He is president and chief executive officer of the organization established in 2007 and considered an affiliate of UA.

Scott Varady, an associate general counsel for the UA System, will represent the UA System.
