Penne's three wins lead Fayetteville girls to Bulldog Relays title

FAYETTEVILLE -- McKenzie Penne was happy to win three events Thursday afternoon, but it was her performance in the long jump that pleased her the most.

The Fayetteville junior leaped a season-high 16 feet, 7.25 inches to win the event during the Bulldog Relays at Ramay Junior High. Penne surpassed her previous-best jump by 3 inches, and edged teammate Olivia Thomas by less than an inch.

"On the long jump, I've been having issues with getting on the board," Penne said. "I was pretty proud with what I jumped. My mindset was just to go in there and do the best I could, and I haven't been jumping very well in the long jump. I actually popped a 16, so I was pretty proud of myself."

Penne was also the high-point winner in the girls division with 32 points as she led Fayetteville's girls to the team title. She had a winning jump of 33-10 in the triple jump, more than a foot farther than second-place Emily Shell of Providence Academy, then added a victory in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 16.19 seconds.

The Lady Purple'Dogs finished the meet with 161 points, while Bentonville was second with 123.

"I was a little tired on the triple jump because I had just run the 300 hurdles," Penne said. "So I just pulled out what I could. The 100 hurdles went about as good as they could go."

Several athletes weren't present at the meet because they have headed to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Kansas Relays. One of them that momentarily stayed back was Springdale Har-Ber sophomore pole vaulter Zach McWhorter, who will head to the Kansas Relays today since he won't do the pole vault until Saturday.

McWhorter's reasoning for staying back was simple; he wanted to get a feel for the Ramay track since it will also be the host site for the Class 7A state meet on May. He did clear 15-1 to win the event, then missed on three attempts at 15-9 -- which would set a personal-high and a meet record.

"I might as well get some jumps on the runway," McWhorter said. "Things went OK today. I didn't jump a PR, but I came in here with one goal. I wanted to get on the runway and get some good jumps in before Saturday and the state meet.

"We didn't have a good tailwind here. It was more like a crosswind, but we're good. This was just a warmup, and Saturday I'll be going against some big dogs. I'm still trying to get 5 meters, which is 16-4, before the season is over."

Fayetteville made it a team sweep by taking the boys division with 167 points. Har-Ber was second with 131, while Rogers Heritage was third with 102.
