Susan Steffens, executive director, said the black tie-optional fundraiser comprises one-third of the nonprofit organization's annual budget.

The nonprofit organization founded in 1978 served more than 5,000 patients in the past year, an increase from some 2,800 in 2012. Steffans said the two most requested items from patients are $10 Walmart gift cards and nutritional supplements such as Boost or Ensure. She said they distribute more than $10,000 in Walmart gift cards to be used to buy gas to get to and from treatment, which is particularly important for those who live in rural areas. She said that frequently if people have to choose between affording food for their families or going to treatment, they'll forgo treatment.

Other offerings include a dozen weekly support groups, medical supplies such as ostomy and mastectomy supplies, cancer survivor programs, wigs, hats and other head coverings and creativity classes for adult and adolescent survivors.
