Flu hits turkeys at Tyson contract farm

Turkeys at a farm that contracts with Tyson Foods have caught the avian flu for the first time since the outbreak began.

The company said in a Wednesday news release that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has confirmed a turkey flock in Iowa was diagnosed with the disease. About 27,000 turkeys were on the farm, according to the USDA.

The area is quarantined, and the birds won't be processed, Tyson said.

"We test all Tyson-owned birds and any flocks that we purchase from third parties for processing at our plants for the virus before those birds leave the farm, and we know the results before birds are processed," the company said in a news release.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the risk to people from this strain of avian flu to be low. No human infections have been reported.

Tyson stock was down 0.78 percent in Wednesday trading.
