Apollo 13 crew members to speak in Fayetteville

Two Apollo 13 astronauts and a NASA flight control director will speak at a free lecture next week as part of the University of Arkansas Distinguished Lecture Series.

James Lovell, Fred Haise and Gene Kranz will recount their experiences and discuss lessons learned during the failed Apollo 13 mission from 1970, as well as the future of NASA and the United States space program, University of Arkansas spokesman Steve Voorhies said in a news release.

The lecture will be at 7 p.m. April 23 in Bud Walton Arena on the Fayetteville campus, Voorhies said. No tickets are required, and the event is free to the public.

Lovell and Haise were captain and lunar module pilot during a moon mission when two days into the trip, an oxygen tank exploded and damaged the Apollo 13.

Kranz worked from mission control with the Apollo 13 crew to make repairs to the spacecraft and bring the three-man crew back to Earth on April 17, 1970.

The story was portrayed in the 1995 Ron Howard film, Apollo 13, which won an Oscar for Best Picture.
