Three counties to get Civil War signs

Three applications for Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial historical markers have been approved for three counties, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced.

The commission works with local partners to tell stories of the Civil War's effect on communities in Arkansas. Applications for historical markers and other information on sesquicentennial observances are available at the commission's website, arkansascivilwar150.com.

The approved markers are:

• Sevier County in the Civil War, commemorating the county's efforts to supply men and materials for the Confederate army. Sponsored by the Sevier County Genealogical Society, the marker will be placed at the Belleville Church and Cemetery, just south of Lockesburg.

• Skirmishes at Mudville, commemorating Civil War events near what is now Lowell in Benton County. The marker will be placed near 300 Old Wire Road in Lowell and is sponsored by the Lowell Historical Museum.

• Arkansas Cadets at New Market, commemorating Arkansas youths at the Virginia Military Institute who fought in the battle of New Market. Sponsored by the Downtown Dames, the marker will be added to Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock in Pulaski County.

The three markers will bring the number of markers to 116 in 63 of the state's 75 counties, according to the commission.
