UA classes go on despite water leak

Classes went on as scheduled Monday at an academic building on the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville campus despite about 1,500 gallons of water that spilled from a broken valve above a classroom ceiling on Sunday, UA spokesman Steve Voorhies said.

The leak at Kimpel Hall was reported about 1:15 p.m. Sunday, with water pouring into Room 407, Voorhies said.

Damage may be confined to the ceiling, Voorhies said, though water also poured into concrete walls and reached the building’s basement. UA’s journalism department is among several departments with offices in the building.

“There was no equipment damaged,” Voorhies said.

Cleanup efforts continued into Monday.

The building, constructed in 1973, has fireproof insulation containing asbestos, Voorhies said.

“There’s no evidence that any asbestos was broken loose,” Voorhies said, though the university took air samples Monday to be tested as a precaution.
