FAYETTEVILLE -- A West Fork man was arrested in connection with shooting a rifle at five people.

James Dersam, 42, of 20880 Strickler Road in West Fork was arrested in connection with five counts of felony aggravated assault and two counts of second-degree endangerment of the welfare after a minor.

Thursday night, about 11:45, Dersam's father, 67, called police and told them his son and his son's girlfriend had an argument and James Dersam was driving in circles in the front yard while shooting a rifle, according to an arrest report.

James Dersam's girlfriend, who has been living with him, told police he began acting erratic after she returned home from taking her high school-aged kids to a school function, according to the report. Dersam began yelling, cussing and breaking things.

His girlfriend called his father and sister for help, according to the report. When they arrived, Dersam's behavior escalted.

Dersam's girlfriend and her kids got into her vehicle and tried to leave, but Dersam broke the driver's side window and took the keys, police said.

Afterward, James Dersam got in his pickup with the rifle and began shooting it out of the window at his girlfriend, her kids, his father and sister, according to the report. His father told him to quit shooting before Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived and he complied.

No one was injured. Dersam was being held Saturday afternoon in the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of a $5,000 bond.
