Quinn deflates Prairie View

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Willie Quinn returned a kickoff 98 yards to spark Southern University to a 34-24 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday night.

Prairie View had closed to within 17-10 late in the first half following Christopher Barrick's 16-yard field goal when Quinn scored. Southern (2-2, 1-0) stretched the lead to 34-10 before Prairie View (0-3, 0-2) scored again at the start of the fourth quarter. Johnta Hebert scored on a 610-yard run and Arthur Lockett ran in from the 31 for the final score.

Lenard Tillery led the Jaguars, rushing for o1e touchdown and 135 yards on 24 carries.

Prairie View's Jerry Lovelocke, a preseason first-team All-SWAC pick, was slowed as he was intercepted twice and sacked two times. He threw for 244 yards and one touchdown. Hebert had 133 yards rushing.

In other games involving Southwestern Athletic Conference teams, John Gibbs Jr. threw two touchdowns and ran for a third as Alcorn State beat Mississippi Valley State 52-9 in Starkville, Miss. Gibbs completed 9 of 18 passes for 141 yards. He also ran for 57 yards on 11 carries. Arron Baker and Darryan Ragsdale had rushing touchdowns for the Braves (3-1, 1-0). Gibbs threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Billy Shed and 26-yarder to Brandon Vessell early in the second quarter for a 35-0 lead going into halftime. The Delta Devils (1-3) scored late in the third on a safety, followed by a 39-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Ivy to Tavis James. They trailed 35-9 as the final quarter began.
