49ERS

QB Johnson released

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers released third-string quarterback Josh Johnson on Saturday.

San Francisco made the move ahead of today's NFC West game at Arizona.

Without Johnson, the 49ers are left with Blaine Gabbert to back up Colin Kaepernick.

The 49ers made the move to clear roster room for tight end Asante Cleveland to be moved to the active roster from the practice squad. Starting tight end Vernon Davis and backup Vance McDonald both have injuries and it was unclear whether either would play against the Cardinals.

Johnson, who played in college at San Diego, signed with the 49ers on May 14.

JETS

Starters questionable

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Wide receiver Eric Decker is listed as questionable and cornerback Dee Milliner doubtful for the New York Jets' game Monday night against the Chicago Bears.

Decker, dealing with tightness in his right hamstring, was limited in practice Saturday after sitting out the previous three days. The Jets' leading receiver with nine catches for 137 yards and a touchdown will likely be a game-time decision for the game at MetLife Stadium.

Milliner, the Jets' top cornerback, appears unlikely to play after sitting out a second consecutive day. He made his season debut last Sunday after suffering a high ankle sprain in training camp, but now also is being hobbled by tightness in his quadriceps.

Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls are likely to start at cornerback for the third time this season.

VIKINGS

Johnson in, Simpson out

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings have signed receiver Charles Johnson off the Cleveland Browns' practice squad to replace Jerome Simpson.

The Vikings announced the move Saturday, two days after they cut Simpson after learning of another arrest this summer. The roster decision left the Vikings thin at receiver, and Coach Mike Zimmer hinted Friday that they were in the market to address depth at the position.

Johnson is in his second season out of Grand Valley State. He has experience with the Vikings' offense after playing for offensive coordinator Norv Turner and quarterbacks coach Scott Turner when the father-son tandem was in Cleveland last season.

Johnson has yet to appear in an NFL game.

RAIDERS

Backup QB Schaub out

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Oakland Raiders listed backup quarterback Matt Schaub as out today at New England.

The team issued a release Saturday saying Schaub won't play but it's not injury related.

Rookie Derek Carr won the starting job for the Raiders (0-2) out of training camp after Schaub struggled in his first preseason since being traded to the Raiders from Houston in March.

Also Saturday, Oakland signed linebacker Bojay Filimoeatu to their active roster from the practice squad.

JAGUARS

Taylor promoted

The Jacksonville Jaguars have promoted second-year receiver Kerry Taylor from the practice squad and waived rookie safety Craig Loston.

The moves came Saturday, one day before the team's home opener against Indianapolis.

Jacksonville needs Taylor to bolster its receiver depth. The Jaguars already ruled out rookie Marqise Lee because of a hamstring injury. Cecil Shorts III (hamstring) and Allen Hurns (ankle) are probable to play, but recovering from injuries. So Taylor will essentially serve as an insurance policy in case either of those guys has a setback.

Taylor spent the first two weeks on Jacksonville's practice squad. He played in 10 games last season, three with Arizona and seven with the Jaguars. He has 22 career receptions for 229 yards and 1 touchdown.
