Bryant bends, puts brakes on Central in red zone

Little Rock Central outgained Bryant Friday night at Quigley-Cox Stadium, but the Tigers couldn't gain yards where they needed them most.

Three failed red-zone attempts in the second half sealed Tigers' fate in a 28-10 loss to Bryant.

The Hornets (2-0-1) intercepted two passes and forced the Tigers to turn the ball over on down on two other occasions.

"We just couldn't ever get the momentum," Central Coach Ellis "Scooter" Register said. "We made some really good adjustments at halftime, and we got into the red zone, and we just couldn't get it done. Our kids played hard and we've just got to keep plugging."

The Tigers (1-2) outgained the Hornets 351-291, with 218 yards rushing, but the yards were harder to come by once Central got inside the Bryant 20.

"We may bend, and we bent a lot tonight, but we didn't break," Bryant Coach Paul Calley said. "The key was field position. When our defense stopped them, even though we didn't score, we flipped the field and forced them to go 80."

Bryant gained 291 yards, with 224 rushing yards and 67 passing yards.

Bryant's Savonte Turner rushed 13 times for 109 yards and 1 touchdown. He caught 1 pass for 15 yards and a score.

Turner ran for 60 of his 109 in the last two quarters of play, keeping his offense on the field and milking the clock.

Central's Richard Hayes gained 93 of his 109 yards in the second, doing what he could to keep his team in the game.

Bryant led 14-0 early, holding Central to 29 first-quarter yards.

Central countered with a touchdown in the second quarter, but that was as close as it would get from that point on.
