Airedales have easy time late

HARRISON -- The Alma Airedales made it seven victories in a row over former conference rival Harrison, outscoring the Goblins 27-0 in the final 12:42 to post a 53-16 victory Friday night at F.S. Garrison Stadium.

The Airedales, No. 9 overall and No. 3 in Class 6A, head into 7A/6A-Central Conference play at 3-0 after road victories at Springdale and Harrison.

"These games mean nothing as far as the conference race is concerned, but we have the kids believing they can win any ballgame right now and have a big momentum push going into league play," said Alma Coach Doug Loughridge. "We loved our non-conference schedule because of how tough it was and we've beaten three good football teams."

Although the game ended up being a mercy-rule victory for the Airedales, the Goblins had a third-quarter run. After the Airedales had built a 26-10 halftime lead, scoring on all four of their possessions, the Goblins held them to three-and-out three times in the third quarter.

The Goblins(1-2) drove the ball deep into Alma territory, but turned the ball over on fourth down two times before finally scoring, getting a 12-yard run by Will Potts with 57 seconds left in the third to make it 26-16.

Tailback Landon Brigance ran 80 yards on the next play from scrimmage for an Alma touchdown with 42 seconds left in the third, the first of four consecutive touchdowns for the Airedales to finish the game.

"The third quarter was like a bad dream that you never wake up from," said Loughridge. "Harrison is a dangerous team and they can score at will. They were doing what they wanted to do on offense."

Alma took the initial lead when Alex Beneux tossed a 6-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Hall, but the Airedales' two-point conversion attempt failed.
